I did it.  I took the plunge.  I have been curious about it and wanting to do it for a while now (because … wrinkles), but I was always just nervous enough to not go through with it.  Until the week before my 36th birthday and then I did it.

I got BOTOX!      (eek)

Anyone who gets it done themselves can never believe when others don’t get it done and now I know why. It’s life-changing.  Ok, that’s maybe a bit dramatic, but also kind of not.  My forehead wrinkles were deep ones.  I had this one line in particular on my forehead that actually made me self-conscious because I’m 36 years old but my forehead looked 20 years older, in my mind.  On top of that, the skin around my eyes looked as tired as I often feel as a busy mama and one-woman team running a business.

It’s important for me to note that the aging process is actually something I embrace.  I am not afraid of ‘getting old’.  I don’t obsess over age nor do I dread birthdays.  Truthfully, feel that I love life even more every year that I get older.  So, to me, skin treatments to slow down the appearance of aging skin is purely something that is an added bonus. If I can appear less tired than I am with quick and easy treatments, I’m in.  It’s as simple as that!

It was time to delve into the world of Botox and I can state with utmost confidence that this is a treatment I will continue to do. Part of my fear and hesitation about Botox was that I’d end up in the worst-case-scenario file where half my face looked frozen or something.  (Which I found out is not even a thing!) To be honest, I didn’t want ANY of my face to look like I’d had Botox done. So, what changed my mind about Botox?  Dr. Kuritzky at Pacific Derm, whom I have been seeing to help me with my skin issues, is what changed my mind.  She assured me that my end result would be very natural.  That is exactly what I hoped to hear and it’s exactly what she did for me!

Dr. Kuritzky listened to me when I expressed my unhappiness with the state of my wrinkles but my desire to have as NATURAL a result as possible.  I didn’t want anyone to ‘know’ that I had had Botox done, even though I am completely comfortable sharing that I got it done.  There’s a big difference there for me when it comes to all the various beautification options that are available.  I like feeling fresh and that I am taking care of myself, but I don’t want anyone’s first impression of me to be “oh jeez- her face!”.

When done well, results look natural. You should expect people to tell you ‘you’re looking good’, or ‘you look rested’. – Dr. Kuritzky

Pre-botox. A good look at my forehead wrinkles!

I learned a lot from my session with Dr. Kuritzky, but one thing that really stuck with me is that Botox not only shows results fairly quickly (mine was in full-effect within about 8-9 days) but Botox is also a preventative measure.  It helps to eliminate future visible lines wherever you get the injections.  That is a game-changer as I am extremely expressive and I can only imagine how much worse my skin would be a few years from now, if I wasn’t doing something to help it age more gracefully.

Botox® is a neuromodulator, of which there are several different brands with slightly unique properties- Botox® (Allergan), Dysport® (Galderma), and Xeomin® (Merz). Neuromodulators temporarily relax the muscles of facial expression to soften dynamic lines- lines that appear when we are expressive, such as frown lines. Depending on the product and location, they take a few days to take effect. Neuromodulators for cosmetic purposes last, on average, 3-4 months before their effects gradually and completely wear off. There is evidence, however, that repeated use of neuromodulators leads to increased collagen production, so in addition to preventing dynamic lines from becoming static lines (more on that below), there are benefits to regular use. – Dr. Kuritzky

Notice the wrinkles around my eyes and on my forehead and how they have decreased significantly!

Definitely not the most flattering pictures but I wanted to include these to show the differences head-on.  This is my frowning/grimacing as hard as I can in both photos.  LOOK at the bridge of my nose!! SO CRAZY!

The results are truly unbelievable.  Those photos were taken just over 2 weeks after my session and I think that my lines have softened even more since this appointment.

Finding someone that you trust to perform treatments like Botox is essential.  I’m not sure I would have ever gone through with it, if it wasn’t Dr. Kuritzky who was doing it for me.  I trust her and knew that she was on board with the desired end-result I had in mind.  If you have been thinking about taking the plunge yourself and getting Botox, you should definitely reach out to Pacific Derm, where you will be in great hands with any of their skilled Dermatologists!
